Update:  E=Elected

October, 2008 – Dear Friends of Human Rights:

Vote Tuesday, November 4 - GENERAL ELECTION for U.S. Congress, Statewide, State Legislature, County offices, and President:  Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at your neighborhood polling place that day.  You may instead vote absentee in-person at your county's Election Board on Friday (October 31, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.), Saturday (November 1, 8 a.m.-1 p.m.), and Monday (November 3, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.).  You may vote early for convenience; no reason is required.  You don't need your Voter Registration Card.

Use the following information to help you make up your mind how to vote.  You may take this sheet into the polls.  Only the districts (Dist.) for your voting precinct will be on your ballot.

Every opposed candidate for U.S. Senate and Congress, statewide office, state legislature, and county offices in the large counties was sent a survey with eleven questions relating to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, other minority, and women's concerns, including employment, marriage, and HIV.  Each response was scored +2 or -2, and bonus points were given for additional comments.  Those candidates best on our issues scored +14 or higher; the worst 14 or lower.

Some candidates are listed as NR, for No Response to the survey.  We also know the public records and statements of some candidates who did not respond.  They are rated NR+ (favorable), NR++ (very favorable), NR– (unfavorable), or NR–– (very unfavorable, going out of their way to make life difficult).

President & Vice-President:  National organizations such as Human Rights Campaign and Stonewall Democrats are supporting Senators Barack Obama and Joe Biden, who publicly support equal employment opportunities and civil unions.  They are not for gay marriage, but oppose amending the U.S. Constitution; Senator McCain is also against the Constitution change but campaigned for a ban in his home state.  Log Cabin Republicans have endorsed Sen. McCain, “because of his inclusive record.”  O.G.L.P.C. did not survey the candidates.

Candidate ratings:  (D) = Democrat   (R) = Republican   (I) = Independent (no party)

JUDICIAL RETENTION:  Not rated.  Votes are on whether to keep those already in office.

STATE QUESTIONS (on back side of ballot):  There are four questions, dealing with property taxes, hunting and fishing, and wineries.  O.G.L.P.C. has not taken a position.  (Election Board information)

WHY VOTE?  Now is the time for us to fully exercise our citizenship with our vote.

The State Legislature creates the state laws that we are all required to follow.  They decide if we could lose our job because of sexual orientation or identity (there's no protection now).  They decide if we could be kicked out of an apartment or denied a home sale (that's legal now).  They decide if we could have visitation if a partner is in the hospital (the blood family may the only say).

And this year, we have an openly gay candidate, JIM ROTH for Corporation Commissioner (statewide), who is very well qualified and an excellent public servant.

Can't find my voter registration card?  Go to your polling place; you may vote without the card if your name is on the list.  If you aren't on the list, see the next paragraph:

WHERE do I vote?  Call your county's Election Board (list at www.ok.gov/~elections/ceb_phys.pdf), or try the website www.ok.gov/elections/ppl/index.php if you know your registration zip code.

What Districts Am I In?  Call your county's Election Board, or check these websites:

For State Representative:  www.okhouse.gov/Research/HouseDistricts.aspx

For County Commissioner:  geo.ou.edu/MapsFrame.htm - select your County, then Precincts

The ballot:  It is a large card, printed on two sides.  You will use a special pen to draw lines between the arrows for candidates and positions you support.  All contests (except judges and city council) are by political party.  The ballot is not a test; you may leave parts blank where you have no opinion.  Straight Party voting is in four separate sections; if you want a straight-party vote for all partisan races you have to vote all four.  Of course, you may mark each race separately.  The state questions and judges are on the back.  We are fortunate in Oklahoma that our voting equipment is very reliable, and that the marked ballots are stored for several months in case a recount is needed.

Democrats:  The major candidates who have not withdrawn are Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama, both of whom are on record as being in favor of same-sex civil unions but not marriage, and both support meaningful hate-crimes laws with inclusion of LGB people (possibly not Ts however).  The Human Rights Campaign has an analysis of Democrats at www.hrc.org/news/5207.htm.

Republicans:  The major candidates still standing are former Governors Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee, and Senator John McCain.  None has expressed current support for same-sex unions or strengthening hate-crimes laws including LGBTs; Gov. Huckabee has seemed especially anti-gay lately.  The Log Cabin Republicans have an analysis of candidates at online.logcabin.org/issues/elections_2008.html.

Another source of candidate information on HIV/AIDS and LGBT issues is a report by the Gay Men's Health Crisis of New York, at www.gmhc.org/policy/federal/pres_report.pdf.

WHY VOTE?  Some of the candidates support us publicly, and we should thank them with our votes.  Some support us when they’re not afraid of their constituents who want us dead.  Some show outright contempt; others cover it with a thin politeness falsely called “family values.”  We too are constituents, and we must use our power in the vote!

Register to Vote:  If you are not registered to vote at your current address, go to your old address for this election.  To change your voter registration, go to any tag agency or your Election Board office, or check out the forms at www.state.ok.us/~elections/voterreg.html .
